We are very sad to learn about the passing of Robert Downey Sr. The film icon was 85-years-old upon his passing.

Downey Sr, father of Robert Downey Jr., was an acclaimed film maker and actor. According to The Sun, Downey Sr. passed away in his sleep, according to his wife, at their New York City home on Wednesday.

He just celebrated his 85th birthday last month. Best known for his roles in Boogie Nights, To Live and Die in LA, and Magnolia, Downey Sr. was a film icon and respected by many. He was battling Parkinson’s disease for over five years prior to his passing.

A New York native, Downey Sr. was in the Army, played minor league baseball, and was a Golden Gloves boxing champion. He did all that while also being a playwright for off-off-Broadway productions before he was 22-years-old.

He starred in such films as Balls Bluff and Babo 76 in the 1960s as Hollywood ushered in a new era. Downey Sr was a part of the cult success of Putney Swope in the 1970s as well.

Our thoughts are with Robert Downey Sr.’s family and friends during this sad time. RIP.
