Downey Sr, father of Robert Downey Jr., was an acclaimed film maker and actor. According to The Sun, Downey Sr. passed away in his sleep, according to his wife, at their New York City home on Wednesday.

He just celebrated his 85th birthday last month. Best known for his roles in Boogie Nights, To Live and Die in LA, and Magnolia, Downey Sr. was a film icon and respected by many. He was battling Parkinson’s disease for over five years prior to his passing.

A New York native, Downey Sr. was in the Army, played minor league baseball, and was a Golden Gloves boxing champion. He did all that while also being a playwright for off-off-Broadway productions before he was 22-years-old.

He starred in such films as Balls Bluff and Babo 76 in the 1960s as Hollywood ushered in a new era. Downey Sr was a part of the cult success of Putney Swope in the 1970s as well.

Being in tune with pop culture doesn't mean it has to make sense, but he tries. Favorite bands include any group from Seattle who formed between 1991 and 1999. 5 Ozzfests under his belt and 12 Warped Tours, but his last concert was a bluegrass AC/DC cover band that was not 100% terrible.
