The Fast & Furious franchise is undoubtedly one of the most popular action franchises to have ever been released in movie theatres. Many fans would agree that it is essentially Vin Diesel’s series at this point, but Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner character was more important in the grand scheme of things according to many.

Walker’s character appeared in six of the first seven movies before he tragically lost his life in a car accident over seven years ago. Due to his sudden demise, the ending to Fast 7 was drastically changed and delayed production as well.

While the ending to the movie gave an emotional sendoff to Walker’s character, Fast & Furious fans have been wondering about the status of the character as part of the film’s universe.

While speaking to EW, Fast 9 director Justin Lin talked about the future of the franchise. Lin then confirmed that Brian O’Conner is alive in the Fast & Furious franchise when F9 takes place.

Yeah, that is a constant issue and something I always want to be very respectful of. The fact that Brian O’Conner is still alive in this universe needs to be acknowledged. We’re treating F9 as the first film of the last chapter, and at some point it is something I think about and how we can really show his presence but in a respectful way. So it’s always ongoing. I feel like in 9 we’ve done it in a way that I feel good about, but, as we go into trying to wrap up the saga, it’s something that I will continue to always be thinking through.

Lin confirming that O’Conner is alive will certainly make a lot of fans happy who were worried about his status. F9 is set to release on June 25 in the USA and fans are undoubtedly looking forward to seeing what will happen in the film.
