After MTV’s 2009 documentary about the Jackass star Steve-O released, he’d become a cultural icon of sorts. From the documentary titled “Steve-O: Demise & Rise,” people saw Steve-O engaging in behavior that can only be described as self-destructive.

Steve-O recounted the times and said that he couldn’t even look at the footage of himself doing all those things.

When I saw the footage of myself doing drugs, I felt like I could see them, I could taste them. It made me crave them and as embarrassing as that footage is, that just seemed like another reason to get high. I couldn’t watch it; I haven’t watched it since then.

The producers put it all together and finished it up without any input for me, it’s better that way.

While Steve-O has kicked the habit since, he’s come as far as going 13 years sober with no relapses. This is an inspiration to all the fans who themselves are going through this dark phase. Going on Twitter, Steve-O went on to post before and after photos, which pretty much explain just how much he’s changed.

In the monumental picture on the left, Steve-O is surrounded by pills, while holding a bottle of booze in one hand and a cigarette in another. The picture on the right shows a stark difference, with the now Steve-O surrounded by broccoli, holding healthy juice in one hand and a carrot in the other. He captioned the post:

So grateful to be celebrating thirteen years of sobriety today— thanks to everyone who helped me get here!

Steve-O has even quit on taking any painkillers, which really affected him at the time of facing difficult tasks on Jackass as well as going through injuries. He recounts the experience of going through an injury and only taking Tylenol and Advil to find relief.

When I got my ankle screwed together. There’s little more invasive surgery than, what do you call it, compound fracture… open reduction. Open reduction, where they screw your whole ankle together, and I went through that and took zero painkillers other than Tylenol and Advil.

Of course, when I was in the hospital, they had me under, and they gave me, I’m sure, some kind of IV pain medication on the spot, but I’ve never even filled out a prescription. Tylenol and Advil for the win. And when it’s really unbearable, Tylenol with Advil.

Steve-O’s resolve only spreads positivity and gives his fans personal strength. Jackass 4 is coming out on September 3, bringing craziness with it that will transcend the craziness of the previous movies.
