Hockey is a rough game, and you wear pads for a reason. This didn’t stop Washington Capitols player Alex Ovechkin from taking a very hard shot below the belt.

Ovechkin’s assalut on Boston Bruins player Trent Frederic’s groin is going to cost him. The NHL has handed down a $5,000 fine for the intentional infraction.

The two had an incident prior to the groin shot where a fight almost occured. Cooler heads prevailed for the time being.

As you can see in the footage below, Ovechkin and Frederic were going at it during the game, and things were intense. Then at one point, Ovechkin speared Frederic in the groin with his stick. That’s a big foul.

There was intensity and drama throughout the entire game that led to this groin shot. In the end, both player received penalties and they were forced to sit out 2 minutes of gameplay.

Now the 35-year-old Ovechkin is paying for it out of his pocketbook. He’ll be find because he made over $120 million in his NHL career so far.
