82-year old Vietnam veteran Herbert Parrish and his wife Lois Parrish were attacked in their residence in South Carolina on Monday. The attack was perpetrated by a knife-wielding intruder named Harold Runnels Jr. who barged into the couple’s residence in the afternoon.
According to Herbert, Runnels knocked on his door asking if the couple had seen his white little chihuahua. The veteran responded by saying that he hadn’t seen it, following which, Runnels barged into the house and attacked the couple with a knife.
A helpless Herbert believed that this would be the end of him and his wife if he didn’t defend himself against the intruder. Herbert said that he realized that the intruder wasn’t going to leave them alive and therefore started thinking of a way to turn the tables on him.
I felt, we’re gone. He’s going to kill us and take what he can take,” Herbert recalled to the outlet. “He was not going to go out that door and leave us alive. That’s the way I felt. That’s why I said, ‘I’ve got to do something quick and get the edge on him. Get the advantage on him.’
Luckily, Herbert spotted the shotgun hanging off one of the walls of his house and attacked Runnels with it. He mauled the intruder to death with the barrel of the gun and managed to save his and his wife’s lives.
I started hitting him in the head with the barrel and I know I must have hit him at least ten times right in the face, just as hard as I could hit him.
According to AP, a bloodied Runnels was unresponsive when the authorities arrived at the Parrish house and died shortly after that at a local hospital, succumbing to his injuries.
The couple later revealed that they had seen Runnels in the neighborhood before but were surprised about why he would want to attack them.
