Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes has said in an opinion piece he did for The New York Times that it is time to break apart social media.

It’s been 15 years since I co-founded Facebook at Harvard, and I haven’t worked at the company in a decade. But I feel a sense of anger and responsibility.
He said in the piece that Mark’s influence is “staggering,” since he alone can change the algorithms, and therefore, the newsfeed of people. His board acts as a set of advisors rather than shot callers. The fact that Mark would sacrifice civility and privacy for clicks is absolutely distasteful to him.
He implored that Facebook’s control can be ended if we just remember the tools to control its influence: Democracy & Law. In the end, he implored that we as a collective people act against the tyranny and end the abuse of privacy as soon as possible.
